So many options when working with layers, especially when duplicating, copying, flattening and merging.  Which one to use and why... that's often the question.  Here's a good tip that covers most occasions.

When merging a set of layers so you can work on your image in a single-layer way, try stamping them to a new layer instead.  Select all relevant layers and press Command-Option-E (PC: Ctrl-Alt-E).  Its the same as duplicating them, then merging, but quicker.

You can now hide the visibility of the original layers (click on their Eye icons) and keep them as backup in case you need to alter them individually again.
